Casio revives the classic: Meet the DW-5000R, a tribute to the first G-Shock watch

Casio’s latest digital watch – the DW-5000R is a tribute to the company’s first G-Shock watch. It will be available in Japan from December 13.

Around 41 years after Casio unveiled the first G-Shock digital watch, the company launched the G-Shock DW-500oR, a new digital watch that resembles the four-decade-old DW-5000C from 1983.

Casio’s first digital watch, engineered by Kikuo Ibe, came into existence after he accidentally bumped into another pedestrian on the street, causing his mechanical watch to fall and crack on the pavement.

In a statement to Vice, Ibe said that when designing the first G-Shock, he aimed to achieve “triple ten” resistance – which means it would have a battery life of ten years, water resistance up to 10 bar (100 meters) and drop resistance up to 10 meters. Unsurprisingly, G-Shock went on to become of the most iconic digital watches of all time.

Coming back to the DW-5000R, Casio says in a press release that the new digital watch is a “higher level of reproduction” than previous models that mimicked the first G-Shock model. The new Casio DW-5000R does look like the original G-Shock, but there are some differences. While the original watch has a case size of 41.6mm, the new one has a slightly larger 42.3mm case. The buttons on the new watch are a bit smaller.

Some other changes include a new LED backlight with the case made from bio-resign. The new watch also offers features like a stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm clock and an automatic calendar. The Casio DW-5000R will be available in Japan from December 13 and can be purchased for 33,000 yen, which roughly translates to Rs 18,400. It will be coming to other countries as well, but the company has yet to share details about the same.
